Condiments and Sauces Commonly Used in Asian Cuisine

When you eat Asian foods, there are a variety of different condiments and sauces that are used. Oriental foods have a lot of flavor, and this is in part because of these sauces that are used when cooking them. Here are some of the commonly used sauces and condiments that you may find in Asian foods.

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce comes in several different varieties. It is made by using soy beans, water, and salt. Sometimes it may have wheat in it as well. Each Asian country may have a different way to make their soy sauce. It really depends on the region. Soy sauce is commonly used for stir fry dishes and soups. It can even be used as a marinade. Generally soy sauce has a lot of salt, but you can find it with lower sodium as well. If you are not used to using soy sauce in your dishes, you will want to use it with caution because it is very strong.

Oyster Sauce

Another common sauce is oyster sauce. This is made with oysters. You cook them until it turns into a sauce. It is generally very thick and is also salty. Most of the time it is used on pork or beef dishes, as it makes a great sauce for these dishes. You will generally not use it when cooking chicken because it does not go as well with chicken. Some people may even add it to their stir fry dishes.

Sweet and Sour Sauce

Sweet and sour sauce is probably one of the most common sauces used in Asian dishes. You use it mainly as a dipping sauce. It is great for chicken, pork or shrimp. There are several different varieties out there. It is usually an orange or red color, and has a sweet taste. Some people even add vegetables to their sweet and sour sauce to add a bit more flavor.

Duck Sauce

Duck sauce is another common Asian condiment. This sauce is usually made out of fruits such as apples, apricots, peaches and even plums. When you make this sauce, you usually add chili peppers, ginger, salt and vinegar. This sauce looks like a light orange color, and it is usually thick.

Sesame Oil

A common type of oil used in Asian dishes is sesame oil. This is used for cooking, but can also add great flavor to dishes. This is made by extracting the oil from sesame seeds. When using this oil, a little bit goes a long way. There is really no need to use a lot, because if you do it may tend to make the dish have too much of a nutty flavor.

These are just a few of the sauces and condiments that are used in many of the different Asian dishes. If you enjoy eating Asian foods, chances are you have had your fair share of these sauces. They can really add a lot of flavor to the dish.
